Obituary for Velma Dorothy Huntington (Cooke)

BARTON-HUNTINGTON, Velma Dorothy (nee Cooke)
October 15, 1924 - March 29, 2023
Velma Dorothy Etta Huntington passed peacefully in her sleep at Grandview Lodge, Dunnville, Ontario, on Wednesday, March 29th, 2023. Velma was in her 99th year and was the second youngest of 8 children. Velma Cooke was born and raised in Haileybury, Ontario. She met Lloyd Barton; they eloped and later built a house in Mount Hope in 1954. They opened a repair business with Lloyd’s father and brother Don. Velma was a nurturing, caring mother who will be sadly missed by Kim Barton (Emily) and the late Barry Barton (Nellie). A loving and proud Grandma to her precious grandchildren, Brandey (Colin), Brad (Jessica) and Rob (Michele). Cherished Great Grams to Lily, Blake, Sydney, Kensie and Lorelei. Beloved Aunty to Marley Drainville. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews and will be dearly missed by her niece Carol Brouse. Velma was predeceased by her husband Lloyd Barton and second husband Charles Huntington. She married Charlie in Caledonia where they built a house and lived until 2014. Velma worked many years as an insurance appraiser assistant with Morden & Helwig Ltd; where she retired from. She was a long-time member of the Glanford Curling Club and organized several bonspiels at the club. While curling with her granddaughter, Velma scored an 8-ender; a rarity in curling. Velma and Charlie enjoyed playing cards and were regulars at Alberton for Euchre events. Canasta and Euchre were some favourite games and at gatherings the cards would come out. Special thanks to the staff at Grandview Lodge in Dunnville for their 9 years of care and support. Velma was well known as the cheeky little lady. She had a sense of humour that the caregivers loved about her. She could have “fun” with the staff. The Barton family will welcome family and friends at the MILLER FUNERAL CHAPEL in Caledonia, on Thursday, April 13th, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Private cremation has taken place.
